Gauge Counts!
Obtaining the correct gauge is important for the proper size and fit of
your project. There's nothing more disappointing than completing a project
that doesn't look or fit as you had envisioned. When deciding whether or
not making a gauge swatch is to tedious a task, consider your precious time
and the rising costs of materials as an incentive to check your gauge.
Since everyone has different crochet techniques, (tight tension, loose
tension, with the goal being an even tension) the hook size indicated in
the pattern is merely a guide. Therefore, have several different size hooks
available and don't hesitate to change hook size to achieve the correct
gauge.
Using
the hook, yarn, and stitch indicated in the pattern directions, crochet a
4 inch square to be measured. Measure the square on a flat surface, being
careful not to stretch, then count the number of stitches and rows per inch.
If you have more stitches per inch, change to the next larger size hook.
If you have fewer stitches per inch, change to the next smaller size hook.
Continue trying this until you find the hook size that will give you the
specified gauge.
If you still find that you're having difficulty obtaining the specified
gauge, the reason could be that you're pulling the loops too tightly or loosely
on the hook as you work. Try adjusting your tension. Remember, checking your
gauge is a necessity if you want your project to be the correct size!
